With nearly 5000 deaths per year from choking, veteran Registered Nurse and School Nurse, Shawna Harper knew Oasis Academy would benefit from having LifeVac devices readily available at the school’s two buildings. Oasis Academy Registrar, Susan Richards, knew the perfect group to help. Richards reached out to the Banner Churchill Hospital’s Auxiliary.
The generous group came through and made a significant contribution to the safety of students at Oasis Academy by donating LifeVac devices to the school’s K-8 and high school buildings. This donation underscores the Auxiliary's commitment to community health and safety.
LifeVac is a non-invasive, portable device designed to quickly and effectively clear airway obstructions in choking emergencies. Each LifeVac kit includes both adult and pediatric masks, making it suitable for use on individuals of all ages.
The devices are particularly valuable in schools, where choking incidents can occur unexpectedly during meals or other activities. By equipping Oasis Academy with these life-saving tools, the Auxiliary is helping ensure that staff are prepared to respond swiftly in such emergencies.
The LifeVac program was brought to Banner Churchill Hospital Auxiliaries attention by long time volunteer Doris Joslyn.
The Banner Churchill Hospital Auxiliary, founded in 1957, is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting healthcare initiatives and community well-being. The Auxiliary is committed to supporting not only the hospital but the entire Churchill County in health related areas.
“It is our hope that by providing LifeVac for every public school in the county that each will be prepared should a choking incident happen and hopefully that they never have to use them,” said Brenda Green, Auxiliary member.
This partnership highlights the importance of collaboration between healthcare organizations and educational institutions to protect students and save lives.
